PACIFIC

STRATUS is looking to showcase photography, installation work, and writing that shows different dimensions and unique interpretations of the theme: PACIFIC in Vancouver.

  • Our annual location-based STRATUS publication hopes to showcase different artists, narratives, hidden gems, and timeless staples from “everyday places,” around the world. The location for STRATUS ISSUE 03: PACIFIC will be Vancouver, BC, Canada.

    • Is your Vancouver a moving subject or a still one?

    • Is your Vancouver driven by natural experience or by cultural handprint?

    • Is your Vancouver vast and complex or personal and intimate?

    • Is your Vancouver a warm memory or a gritty reality?

    • Is your Vancouver anonymous or identifiable?

STRATUS is looking for submissions to be published in a journal and to be displayed at a journal launch event that interpret the theme: PACIFIC which explores dichotomies in Vancouver: nature vs. culture, individualism vs. aggregation, memory vs. modernity, anonymity vs. identification, or others.

A neighbourhood might present itself through thin walls that implicate you in unwilling eavesdropping. A narrative might emerge from colourful storefronts and habits of people who frequent them. Time might be experienced in the cycles of the ocean, sand, and rain.

An exploration of these categories may show how they clash with each other or how they seamlessly intersect.

What am I submitting?

STRATUS is looking to showcase photography, installation work, and writing that shows different dimensions and unique interpretations of the theme PACIFIC, in Vancouver. Some selected artwork would be displayed at the journal launch event in Vancouver and Edmonton. Please include the following in your submission, based on which category you are submitting for:

📸 Photography

  • A photography submission (up to 20 photos). We love film photography, but in the name of accessibility: all photo formats are welcome (yes that means digital… or iphone). While we encourage you to go out and take new photos for this, old work is also acceptable. Vancouver-based photographers may be contacted further for a commissioned body of work. All photo submissions should be taken around the greater Vancouver area.

  • A written statement of your work.

  • Portfolio (not a requirement- we welcome Instagram portfolios and hobbyists !)

🎨 Installations

  • A creative proposal that describes your installation concept. The proposal can be in any format that conveys your idea and vision to us:  a mix of images/renders and text, a written piece, a slide deck, etc. In the past we’ve showcased a wide range of installations: from digital projection work to life-sized physical built installations or a miniature diorama (installations don’t have to mean BIG)! Installations would be displayed at a venue at the journal launch event in Vancouver. Some things to consider for your proposal:

    • The installation is temporary, for a one to two night event.

    • How will it be installed? Artists are responsible for all technical, fabrication, installation, and removal of the artwork. Installations may have to be installed in a limited timeframe that would be specified later.

    • A working budget of up to $1000 can be provided for the installation. This budget can be used for the purchase of new materials (receipts required). It may also be used to cover transportation costs. This budget does not cover capital purchases such as tools/equipment.

    • Structural integrity and weather worthiness. Sculptures and installations might go outside, so design with wind, rain, and sun in mind. Public interaction and safety are also important, how will people engage with the installation? Will people walk under it, touch it, or watch from afar? This is specific to each artist, and artists will be contacted by curator to further discuss your project closer to installation period.

  • Portfolio (not a requirement- we welcome Instagram portfolios and hobbyists to apply !)

✍ Creative Writing

  • A creative writing submission (e.g. short narrative, poem, love letters to the city, opinion pieces) that is an interpretation of PACIFIC.

    • Include your submission as an attached file.
